Jean-Vincent Simonet (b.1991) is an artist who graduated from ECAL (École cantonale d’art de Lausanne) in 2014. He lives and works between Paris and Zurich.
Simonet works at the intersection of photography, painting and digital culture. Drawn to technological systems and critically aware of their accelerating pace, he examines how images are produced, transformed and circulated. Through repeated printing, chemical alteration, overexposure, mechanical stress, physical contamination and digital manipulation, he destabilizes the photographic image. His works refuse any fixed form: they slip from one state to the next and never resolve. By probing the very structure of the image and holding it in permanent precarity, Simonet frees it from the captivity that has long obsessed the history and theory of the medium.
This instability resonates with the environments he photographs, themselves marked by fragility or disappearance. These spaces carry the traces of obsolete technologies, failed utopias and ongoing environmental mutation, at times drifting into speculative or fictional territory.
Simonet has exhibited at the Centre de la Photographie Genève, Fotomuseum Winterthur, FOAM Amsterdam, Webber Gallery London, The Ravestijn Gallery Amsterdam, Sentiment Zurich, CentroCentro Madrid, the Reiffers Art Center Paris and the Centre Photographique de Rouen.
